ROYAL OPENING OF UNIMAX MACMILLAN BRANCH
OFFICE/WAREHOUSE IN KUMASI

His majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene welcomed Unimax Macmillan to Ashanti when he commissioned the new Unimax Macmillan Limited (UML) branch office and warehouse in Kumasi. Otumfuo unveiled the plaque and cut the tape with the support of the Arch Deacon of Anglican Church of Kumasi to signify the formal opening of the new branch office and warehouse.

Mr. Edward Addo, the Managing Director of UML stated in his keynote address that the opening of the branch office was in direct response to Otumfuo's educational initiative and the Ministry of Education's (MOE) devolution and decentralisation Policy. According to Mr Addo, the Kumasi office and warehouse facilities will serve as the nerve centre for other regions including Brong Ahafo and the Northern Regions.

Mr Addo outlined the contributions of Macmillan to the educational development of the country. He further stated that UML has been working closely with the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service in producing good quality books for use right from pre-school to tertiary levels. He disclosed that UML is involved in the preparation of FCUBE Books and that there are very good materials in the pipeline. "We intend to work with the regional, district, community and local libraries to help develop the reading culture in Ghanaians especially our children" Mr. Addo added.

The Regional Minister, Mr S.K. Boafo stated that the greatest tool for development, given the basic conditions of peace and unity is education. He therefore called on UML to continue to collaborate with all stakeholders in the development of education in the region. He expressed the hope that with the presence of UML in the region, educational standard in the region will further improve. He assured UML that his doors are always open for consultation to speed up collaborative efforts to raise the standard of education in the region.

Otumfour in a chat with Mr S.K. Boafo, the Regional Minister and Mr. Edward Addo, the MD UML

The Regional Director of Education, Mr. A. A. Dramani who stood in for the Minister of Education as Chairman for occasion, commended UML for their collaborative efforts. He appealed that UML offices be extended to every part of the country to satisfy the book needs of the people.

The Asante regional cultural group entertained the guest to traditional music and dance. The dignitaries, including the King of Ashanti were later conducted round the office and warehouse. The showroom had posters and variety of Macmillan titles on display.


Donation

Alison Hubert of Macmillan International presented a cheque of Twenty Million Cedis (¢20,000,000) and Sports Kit on behalf of Unimax Macmillan Ltd. to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This was the contribution of the company to the Otumfuo Educational Fund, which falls in line with our overall commitment to the development of education in the country.

UNIMAX MACMILLAN LIMITED SUPPORTS TERTIARY/SECONDARY EDUCATION AT EDUC FAIR 2001

Unimax Macmillan Limited (UML) was at the just ended first ever-educational exposition with a number of activities including radio quiz competition for senior secondary schools (SSS), book donations to selected libraries and exhibition of our teaching and learning materials. The fair with the theme, Commerce and Industry: Promoting the Development of Quality Minds for Accelerated Socio-Economic Development, was organised by the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (G.N.C.C.) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (G.E.S.) with the support of other organisations including UML.

Unimax Macmillan supports tertiary education at EDUCFAIR

As part of our activities during the fair, we presented the second consignment of the World Book Day donation to six selected libraries: University for Development Studies Library, University of Cape Coast Library, University College of Education Library, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Library, the Balme Library and the Ghana Library Board. This was presented at the National Union of Ghana Students' (NUGS) Day, organised at the fair with the support of UML. It would be recalled that the first consignment of this donation, made possible by Palgrave (A Division of Macmillan International) was presented at the launch of 2001 World Book and Copyright Day.

UML also organised a Radio Quiz Competition for five selected senior secondary schools in Accra: St. Mary's; Accra Academy; Presbyterian Secondary, St. Aquinas Secondary and Achimota Secondary. Presbyterian Secondary came first, winning UML Readers, T-shirts, Pens, Wall Clock and other promotional items.

UML as usual mounted book and poster exhibitions, which attracted over 800 visitors. On the whole we had a very good show of our new and old products and above all the opportunity to once again contribute and support secondary and tertiary education in appreciation for the assistance and assured us that the books will be given out as prizes to deserving teachers, students and pupils. We reminded them of our commitment to the development of education and called on teachers, students and pupils to patronise and enjoy learning with Unimax Macmillan books.
